He left a few weeks ago. I can’t afford a divorce and he says he’ll get one when he’s ready. When I talk about him do I say “my ex” or “my husband”? We’re not getting back together.

go to the public library. Ask at the reference desk for the forms to file for divorce. ITs free. YOu fill them out then take them to the courthouse. You can hire an atty later if you need to.
He is not your ex until the divorce is final. By law he still has rights and obligations that he wont have once its final. You cant just declare someone your husband an dyou cant declare him your ex. If you date right now, you are cheating. You are still married legally.

Plus, nowadays, the forms are usually available at the courthouse for maybe $10 or $15. Check with your local court or your state bar association.

And he’s not your “ex” until the divorce decree is signed by the judge. Until then, he is your husband and you are legally married.

Divorce comes with the same symptoms of death. Denial, anger, sadness, bargaining, then acceptance. These emotions come in different orders. I don’t know how long you were together or why you broke up. One of the biggest marriage breakers is cheating, abuse, physical, or mental. One I am seeing a lot lately is from the economy. So I guess I would call that one money issues. If 5 months down the road you still are in the same situation you are ex. Check the paper, they do have some really cheap lawyers for divorce, or you can do one yourself go to the clerks office. Long as no kids involved and uncontested. Other wise you need some money on a lawyer, call around a lot of them give free consults.
